The Old Man And The Snake

Once upon a time there was a farmer. One day while he was working in the fields, he heard a noise. He looked around and suddenly saw a massive snake staring at him.

The farmer stood there, unable to move. It was like he was rooted to the ground. The farmer and the snake stood there for a while, just staring at each other.

After some time the farmer understood what had happened. He had been enchanted by the snake. He came to senses and remembered what he needed to do.

He had to maintain eye contact with the snake and not stop staring until he could guess the snake’s name. If he guessed the name correctly, the snake would go away. If not, he’d eventually die. Those were the rules of how to break a snake’s enchantment.

The farmer made many guesses. What would a snake be named? But none of his guesses were right.

Hours passed. The farmer and the snake were still standing there staring at each other.

When it came time for lunch, the farmer’s daughter came outside to bring her father food. She found her father staring at ther snake.

It was so hot that the farmer was sweating and turning red. Even the snake was exhausted at this point. The farmer was so hot, he implored his daughter, “Please, undo one of my shirt buttons. I’m burning up!”

All of a sudden the snake burst into dust. The snake’s name was Button! So the man narrowly escaped his death, and went to rejoice with his family that he had broken the snake’s enchantment.
