The Lion And The Rabbit

Once upon a time there was a very cowardly rabbit. He was so scared that he never went far from his burrow, because he was too scared of being eaten.

One day he decided that he was going to try being brave. He left his burrow and wandered far away, to a nearby well to get some water.

There he was confronted by a huge, ferocious lion. The lion grabbed him in his massive paws. The lion roared and said, “You cannot escape me. Now I will eat you!”

The rabbit was very scared but he knew he had to be brave to survive. He said, “You’ve got me, lion. There’s no way I’m strong enough to beat you!”

The lion puffed out his chest. “Of course you aren’t strong enough. I’m the strongest animal around here!”

“I would agree.” the rabbit said. “There’s just one thing…” “What is it?” The lion asked.

“Well,” said the rabbit, “I know of a lion who thinks he’s even stronger than you. He says he could easily beat you in a fight.”

The lion gasped. “Take me to this lion! I must defeat him and prove I’m the strongest!”

So the rabbit pointed the lion in the direction of the well. “Look in there, lion. You’ll see your opponent there!”

The lion looked into the well and saw his own reflection. Thinking the reflection was the other lion, he jumped in, saying, “So you think you’re strong enough to beat me?”

As soon as the lion landed in the water, he understood that the rabbit had tricked him. His pride had been his downfall.

And so the brave rabbit skipped away, having avoided being eaten by the lion.
